Rei Kawakubo is the first living designer to have a solo show at the Met since Yves Saint Laurent in 1983. According to a New York Times interview with her husband and Comme des Garçons chief executive Adrian Joffee, Kawakubo has never been invited to the Met Gala in the past. Well, this is sure to be an exciting start.
The gala will take place on the first Monday in May, as a tradition and will be co-chaired by Anna Wintour, Katy Perry, and Pharrell Williams, with Kawakubo as honorary chair. “Rei Kawakubo is one of the most important and influential designers of the past forty years,” said the Costume Institute’s curator in charge, Andrew Bolton. “By inviting us to rethink fashion as a site of constant creation, recreation, and hybridity, she has defined the aesthetics of our time.”
With the full Comme des Garçons Archive on view, the exhibitions will span from her debut in 1981 to her most recent works. The garments will be arranged by contrasting themes: East/West, Male/Female, and Past/Present, examining Kawakubo's fascination with "in-betweenness."
