For the fashion industry, this is a biggie. After heading up his own avant-garde eponymous line, and designing for the likes of Jil Sander and Christian Dior, Belgian fashion designer Raf Simons has finally been confirmed as the new Chief Creative Officer taking over the Calvin Klein empire. This comes after months and months of speculation from industry insiders and various fashion press outlets. And since the announcements, the same people who speculated this big change for Calvin Klein are now reflecting upon what this means for the fashion world. If edgy, avant-garde, innovative designers are being chosen to head up classical American staple brands, this means change. That’s one thing that’s for sure.
We’ve seen the Calvin Klein brand reinvent itself with the #mycalvins undergarments campaign that started quite a revolution for the label. The latest campaigns feature a number of tastemaking celebrities and it-boys and girls, including the likes of Frank Ocean, Keith Ape, and Young Thug, to name a few. But perhaps this was all done in preparation for Raf’s arrival.
Raf Simons, “completely, completely obsessed with trying to get out of the fashion system,” is prepared to bring positive, yet radical, change to the label, incorporating a new creative direction that classic Calvin Klein followers may not yet be prepared for.
