Last week saw the release of Supremacist, a novel literally dedicated to the successful hype built up around New York-based streetwear and skate label Supreme. Written and compiled by New York-based author David Shapiro, the novel chronicles why today’s men are so obsessed with Supreme, and how its cult appeal developed so rapidly. Shapiro interestingly examines Supreme’s hype in many different lights – from consumerism, to New York City as a symbol, to masculinity, and more. The novel itself features artistic polaroid images of selected Supreme favourites.
Let’s face it, Supreme began a new era of fandom that made way for other brands such as Palace, VFILES, Stüssy, Gosha Rubchinskiy, Kanye West’s Pablo line, and more. Exploring and deconstructing how a plain box-logo tee can make a man go crazy really is a fascinating approach to a novel.
Published by Tyrant Books, the novel is available in stores and online.
